Mindfulness therapy

Mindfulness therapy in Inverness city centre

Therapies that incorporate the ancient practice of mindfulness are currently very popular and can be beneficial for people experiencing a range of difficulties including stress, anxiety, mood-related issues and much more.

Mindfulness works by training the mind to focus on the immediate present. This requires practice to master, but it is worth persevering as mindfulness has been shown to be beneficial to health and wellbeing.

How does mindfulness work?

We all think negative thoughts and while these thoughts are just our minds mulling things over, we often accept them as the ‘truth’. This in turn can have a huge impact on how we feel. For example, thinking thoughts such as: “last time I did that I failed, I’m going to fail again” or “that person doesn’t like me” can result in negative feelings even though these are just thoughts. We may start to feel angry, sad, guilty, anxious or regretful and may respond to these feelings in a negative way.

People who practise mindfulness regularly will learn to recognise such thoughts as they come and go rather than accepting them as the truth.

Can mindfulness help me?

Practising mindfulness will enable you to recognise and accept the comings and going of thoughts through your mind without placing too much importance on them. You will begin to realise that your thoughts do not necessarily reflect reality and are affected by your moods. Mindfulness is therefore extremely powerful in allowing you to accept your thoughts and find a more peaceful way to exist in your day to day life.
